Few months ago, I was tasked to set up a website for a Community Centre Youth Group. For the ease of updating, I chose Wordpress as the content management system engine for this website. And this was proven to be the right choice.

Everyday, there are new visitors found the website through search engines, like Yahoo! or Google. Do note that there are:
No submission to Social Bookmarking Sites
Or any additional effort used to drive traffic to this site.

On top of using Wordpress as the engine behind the website, there are other contributing factors.

The main content for this website is to post upcoming courses and activities at the community centre. Links are provided to send readers to the main site for signing up these courses and activities. In fact, most of the content is copied from the course registration website.

Optimized using Plugins

There are many free plugins available out there for Wordpress. Most plugins optimize and enhance the power of the website.

With the recommendation from Atomic Blogging, we installed some very useful plugins on this site. One is Google Sitemap. It will automatically generate a site map and submit the map to search engines. Now the search engines are updated with the latest content from the site

Update Frequently

Most search engines like regularly updated sites and rank these sites higher. The reason is that this proves the website is alive and up-to-date.

There is at least 1 new post every week on average. This consistently feeds the search engines with new content, although most are repeated content, with little changes.

Tags and Keywords

Although most of the contents were “copied” from the main site, we put in the effort to identify the keywords in each post and use these keywords as tags.

Many do not realize that, this will help the search engines to identify the keywords in the post as well. And when people search for these keywords, the search engines will match the tags and the relevant post will be shown.

I had made the right choice for using the Wordpress as the engine behind this community centre youth group website. Regular posting, plugins and tag will help to bring in traffic through the search engines. I believe this success can be easily duplicated for any organization’s website.
