One of my Community Websites Went Offline
Filed Under (General) by kimloon on 11-05-2009
I have been working of a few community websites. Recently, one of these websites went offline. The reason was the domain was expired. I did not notice it until another person informed me about it.
I quickly dug out the old e-mails, to seek out the passwords and renew this domain. After that, it took another about 24 hours before the domain was live again. This could be a simple thing, but it could be destructive to the site, considering the down time, and the potential number of visitors.
One common problem with community websites was that, the domain and the hosting plan was registered by somebody else instead of the person working on it at the present. It could be registered by one member and another member took over the website. It usually happens when the community committee members’ term expired and a new team came in to take over.
Other reason is that, one member registered the domain and another member was tasked to work on the website. It could sound confusing, but this was the case which I faced. The renewal notice was not sent to me but to the other member. Lucky for me, this member forwarded the details to me, which I could react swiftly to renew this domain.
With this lesson, I had put in my calendar to remind myself one year later, to check renew this domain. This simple step would help to prevent another incident of website going offline.
